DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran falls victim to cyberattack, loses Rs 99,999

Tambaram: DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, a Member of Parliament from the DMK party, was duped of Rs 99,999 through cyber fraud.

The MP lodged a complaint after the amount was debited from his bank account on Sunday (October 8).

In the complaint, Dayanidhi Maran stated that his wife Priya Maran received phone calls inquiring about a Rs 99,000 transaction on Sunday.

Priya received three such calls but did not share any One-Time Password (OTP) details with the callers, according to the complaint.

In his complaint, Dayanidhi Maran also noted that the debited funds were from a joint Axis Bank account held by both himself and his wife. However, Priya’s phone number was not linked to this account.

Dayanidhi said the caller was speaking in Hindi with Priya, and she had asked him to contact Dayanidhi directly.

However, on the same day, Priya received calls from two other numbers, at 4:14 pm and 4:15 pm. Shortly after these calls, Dayanidhi got an SMS notification stating that Rs 99,999 had been debited from his savings account in a single transaction.

The MP urgently requested the police to take necessary action to recover the funds and to initiate legal proceedings against the fraudsters. The matter is under investigation.
