In an accident where a container lorry collided with a moped near Vanakaram, a young woman who was receiving treatment for having her legs amputated died.
Road widening works are currently underway on the Poonnamalle highway near Chennai. Due to this, there are a number of potholes on the road.For a road that is always jammed with heavy vehical traffic and consistently busy these potholes have been a nuisance to all the vehicles esp the motorists passing thro the road on a daily basis.
A number of accidents have been reported frequently from this area. Almost 8 people have lost their lives due to accidents on the road from Velappan Chavadi to Vanagaram.
Nitya (27) hails from Mangadu, Ambal Nagar, next to Chennai. Her friend is Rohini (24) from Senneerkuppam next to Poonamallee. Both friends were working in the lending department of a private bank in Ambattur. Last night, after work as usual, both of them were going home from Ambattur on the same moped.
Nithya was driving the moped and Rohini sat behind.It was at the Poonnasmalle Highway, Maduravayal near Vanakaram signal that a container lorry coming behind at high speed collided with a moped. Both of Nitya’s legs were broken as the container lorry went over those who fell down. One of Rohini’s legs was seriously injured.
The motorists and neighbors who saw the incident informed the police. Koyambedu Traffic Investigation Division police reached the spot after receiving the information and with the help of the public, rescued the two injured and sent them to Kilpakkam Government Hospital. Both Nithya’s legs were surgically amputated. Both the women were under Intensive Care Unit and undergoing treatment.
However in a tragic turn of events Nithya died yesterday despite treatments from the hospital. Rohini continues to receive treatment. Mohan (32), the driver of the container lorry who caused the accident, has been arrested. He is being interrogated.
The incident of the death of a young woman in an accident while returning home after finishing work at the bank has caused a great tragedy in the area.
