Police to further tighten the traffic violation checks in Tambaram

In the first quarter of this year, the Tambaram police commissionerate recorded nearly one lakh traffic offences, with wrong-side driving accounting for 16,255 of them. Riding without a helmet accounted for 14,129 incidents, and parked vehicles obstructing traffic flow accounted for 9,507 cases.

Aside from that, 7,502 persons were ticketed for failing to obey traffic signals, 6,566 for parking in prohibited areas, and 3,350 pillion riders for not wearing helmets.

In the first quarter of the year, the commissionerate, which covers sections of key highways such as GST Road, Old Mahabalipuram Road, and East Coast Road, has recorded 146 fatalities in 571 road accidents.

The cops have decided to tighten up on traffic offences even further. Their most recent campaign is against random U-turns by vehicles, for which 1,520 charges were filed in the first three months of the year.

Twenty motorists were also ticketed for failing to stop at unsecured railway gates.

In addition, 538 cases were filed in response to accusations of reckless driving by large vehicles on highways blocked to truck traffic.
